Dopamine in Toxic Relationships: Why You Can Want Someone You Don’t Even Like

Dopamine in toxic relationships is not a pleasure signal. Since 1993, Terry Robinson and Kent Berridge have shown that wanting and liking run on separate brain systems, and that only wanting depends on dopamine. Rats stripped of nearly all brain dopamine still showed completely normal pleasure reactions to sugar. They simply stopped pursuing it.

Which means the thing holding someone in place was never their enjoyment of it.

Dopamine Is the Wanting Chemical, Not the Pleasure One

The central finding is a dissociation nobody was looking for. In work summarised in American Psychologist (2016), Berridge and Robinson describe rats whose brain dopamine had been almost entirely destroyed by neurochemical lesion. The animals no longer sought or consumed food at all. Left alone, they would have starved.

But when sugar was placed in their mouths, their “liking” reactions were completely normal. The pleasure was entirely intact. Only the pursuit was gone.

The reverse holds too: stimulating the same mesolimbic system to raise dopamine quadrupled a rat’s wanting to eat, and did not enhance liking at all. The two dials are not connected.

The Brain Has Very Little Room for Liking

Wanting and liking are not merely conceptually separate. They are physically separate, and the two are not the same size.

Berridge and Robinson report that the hedonic hotspot in the rat nucleus accumbens — the tissue that can actually amplify pleasure — is about one cubic millimetre, roughly a tenth of the structure. The other ninety per cent has no ability to enhance liking whatsoever. It can still generate intense wanting.

Liking, in their words, is mediated by smaller and fragile neural systems. Wanting runs on large and robust ones. When those two disagree, it is not a fair fight.

Rejection Runs on the Same Circuit as Love

Helen Fisher, Lucy Brown, Arthur Aron and colleagues put fifteen people into an fMRI scanner: ten women and five men, recently rejected by a partner and still intensely in love. Each viewed a photograph of the person who had rejected them.

Looking at the rejecter activated the ventral tegmental area on both sides — the dopamine-rich region that also lights up in people who are happily in love. Writing in the Journal of Neurophysiology (2010), the authors concluded that mesolimbic reward systems are involved in romantic passion regardless of whether one is happily or unhappily in love.

The reward system does not check whether the relationship is going well. It was never measuring that.

Why “I Don’t Even Like Them Anymore” Changes Nothing

Put the two findings together and a familiar sentence stops being a paradox.

Someone can say, accurately, that they no longer enjoy a relationship, no longer respect the person, and cannot name a single good thing they get from it — and still be unable to stop reaching. On the pleasure model, that is incoherent. On the wanting model, it is the predicted result. Liking fell away; wanting is on another system, and that system was never reporting to it.

Robinson and Berridge made the point early. In their original 1993 paper they noted that sensitised craving persists even in the face of strong disincentives, including the loss of reputation, job, home and family. Cost is not the input. Wanting does not read it.

This is the neural layer underneath intermittent reinforcement. The schedule decides when the reward lands. Dopamine is why you keep reaching between the landings, and it is a large part of why people stay in toxic relationships long after they can explain exactly what is wrong.

What This Shows, and What It Does Not

The caveat the pop-science version always skips: nearly all of the wanting-versus-liking work was done with rats, sugar and drugs. Berridge and Robinson study addiction, not partners. Fisher’s rejection study is small — fifteen people — and reports where blood flow went, not what anybody did next.

So no, this is not evidence that anyone is addicted to a person, and it is not a diagnosis of anything. What transfers is the architecture. Wanting and liking are separable in humans too, and the circuitry carrying romantic wanting is the circuitry the addiction literature has spent thirty years mapping.

That is enough to explain why leaving does not follow from realising, and why the mind then manufactures reasons to stay — which is cognitive dissonance picking up where dopamine left off. It is not enough to tell anyone what their own relationship is, which is why what manipulation actually is has to be defined by behaviour rather than by brain scans.
